Continuing education for architects

Title of the Course:
Designing With Natural Stone

Course Organizer:
Veronafiere – The Verona Trade Fair Company

Where and When:
Verona, Italy - September 27th - October 2nd, 2010 - in conjunction with MARMOMACC, The International Exhibition of Stone, Design and Technology

About MARMOMACC:
Held annually at Veronafiere, MARMOMACC is the global showcase of stone materials and machinery. In 2009, over 1,500 exhibitors from 54 countries attracted more than 63,000 trade visitors - including 27,000 foreign visitors from 120 countries.
MARMOMACC is the ideal place to see the latest stone-related machinery and technologies, to directly source stone for commercial projects, and to view the full spectrum of stone materials available for residential applications. Each year, the show features a number of architectural exhibits and conferences devoted to designing with dimensional stone.

The Stone Industry in Italy:
Italy is a global leader in the stone industry, with over 12,000 companies active in the sector, generating a turnover of more than Euro 3 billion.

Veronafiere, A Continuing Education Provider:
Veronafiere has been an American Institute of Architects (AIA) CES provider since 1999.
Since 2003, it has also been recognized as a provider by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and by the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC).
In 2008 Veronafiere became official provider of AIA Australia (Australia Institute of Architects) and in 2009 of South African Institute of Architects (SAIA).
Over the past ten years, over 300 architects from all over the world have participated in “Designing With Natural Stone.”

Veronafiere offers this course to help architects learn advanced techniques in the use of marble, granite and other stone materials.
The program is a unique combination of classroom lectures, guided architectural tours, and field trips to nearby quarries, as well as to natural stone processing facilities.
This comprehensive approach helps architects to better understand the stone’s full life-cycle, including how marble is quarried, cut, processed, finished, selected for specific jobs and installed, using the latest technologies and products.

“Designing with Natural Stone” has been recognized by the AIA as a “Best Practices and Trends” program. Comments from recent participants support this judgment:
  • "The week-long experience was great. What I particularly enjoyed was learning about new products and technologies now being used for stone. I will certainly utilize what I learned in my future work." Saverio Manago - Michael Graves & Associates (Princeton, NJ)
  • "I feel that the mixture of lectures, presentations, tours and hands-on was just right. I had a marvellous week, met a lot of interesting people and hope that I can continue to be involved with this group and with the program." Thomas McCabe - Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (New York, NY)
  • "I was really grateful to be included in the course. Even though I started out with a certain amount of knowledge about stone, I felt like I learned a lot and was exposed to things I would not otherwise have been exposed to." Debra Gerod, Gruen Associates (Los Angeles, CA)
  • "I found so much of the course to be useful. I am constantly thinking of new ways to apply what I learned." Stephen Alexander, Prince Alexander Partners (Indianapolis, IN)
  • "I feel honored that I was chosen to go and will value the experience the rest of my life. It is one of the highlights of my career." Ken Harry, Ken R. Harry Associates (Houston, TX)
